New Sony VAIO Laptops Get Hardware Upgrade

If you're waiting for Sony's VAIO refresh, here’s something to tide you over while awaiting its release.  The company noted on its blog that its Z, S and E series will have their CPUs upgraded along with other component changes. The C series, meanwhile, will sport the same internals specs-wise but will have changes on its exterior.

HTC Primo Android 4.0 Smartphone Rumored

We are expecting to see quite a few Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones at Mobile World Congress, which takes place in Barcelona next month, and we have already heard about a few new devices from HTC.

Now according to the guys over at Stuff, HTC will also be announcing another new Android smartphone, the HTC Primo which is rumored to feature a 3.7 inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display, with Gorilla Glass.

Fender Mustang Floor, Multiple Effect Control Pedal Unveiled

Fender has combined dozens of effects into its new Fender Mustang Floor pedal, which it introduced and added its range of products this week. The Mustang Floor has been designed to be a natural extension of the company’s Mustang amps range, and shares the same LCD display and surrounding button layout as the Fender Mustang III.

The new Fender Mustang is equipped with selection and control via nine stomp foot switches on the face and a solid aluminium expression pedal to their right. You can view the connections on the read of Fender Mustang after the jump.

The new Magnus iPad 2 stand which has been designed by Ten One Design might well be worth a look. There are plenty of iPad stands available to purchase, but the new Magnus stand takes a new innovative approach to keeping your iPad 2 attached to the stand and in an upright position, using the internal magnets of the iPad 2. Which were originally added by Apple for use with their Smart Cover.

The foot section of the new minimalist Magnus iPad 2 stand provides just enough metal for the magnets to make contact, and keep the tablet securely enough in place whilst in landscape mode to be used.

Sony Xperia Ion Goes Up For Pre-order

AT&T and Sony recently announced the Sony Xperia Ion, which is expected to be available with AT&T in the second quarter of 2012, but now it would appear that one retailer, Negri Electronics has the handset up for pre-order for $569.50 for an unlocked model.

The Sony Xperia Ion is Sony’s first smartphone to use the Sony brand rather than their previous Sony Ericsson Brand and the device comes with a a 4.6 inch HD Reality display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

LG Optimus 3D 2 Revealed?

Earlier today we saw a leaked render of what is reported to be the new LG X3, and now we have details of another new LG smartphone that is expected to be announced at MWC 2012 next month, the LG Optimus 3D 2.

The device is apparently codenamed the CX2 and it is expected to come with a range of upgraded specifications over the original LG Optimus 3D.

LG Optimus Black Gets Android Gingerbread In Europe

It looks like LG has finally rolled out the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update for their LG Optimus Black smartphone in Europe, and it looks like it is also available in India as well.

Ball Beats Sequencer Adds A Physical Element To Music Creation, Rather Than A Touchscreen (video)

OverThe last few weeks we featured a number of state-of-the-art sequences, mixers and amplifiers here on Geeky Gadgets in the run-up to the NAMM show. Many of which included a dock for Apple’s iPad tablet, enabling you to do an array of different things with your musical instruments and audio.

Looking to bring a more physical edge to sequencing rather than using the touchscreen. A new sequencer called “Ball Beats” has been created that uses steel ball bearings to create and compose beats. The Ball Beats sequencer has been designed to be used with either Mac Linux or PC computers and provides a more original way to create beats. Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock Trailer Released (video)

Following on from the very brief teaser that was released towards the end of last year for the BBC’s new Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock game. Today the BBC have rolled out a full trailer for the new Doctor Who game which is expected to arrive in March on Playstation 3, Playstation Vita and PC platforms. XBMC Running On A Raspberry PI (Video)

Last week we saw a video of Air Play running on the Raspberry PI $35 mini PC and now we have another video, this time it is XBMC running on the Raspberry PI with 1080p full HD video.

The video below shows a Raspberry PI model B, which comes with HDMI, Ethernet and a USB port, you can see two full HD videos running on the device in 1080p.

SiriToggles Enables Added Functionality Including App Launching To Jailbroken iPhones

iPhone 4S users with jailbroken phones who are looking to add a little more functionality to the standard Apple Siri personal assistant. Should check out a new application called SiriToggles which has been designed for the iPhone 4S and will allow users to adjust settings and launch applications via voice commands.

iOS developer Hamza Sood’s tweak, called SiriToggles has been designed to plug some of the gaps which many iPhone users feel have been left out by Apple in the current beta version of its Siri personal voice assistant, installed on standard iPhone 4S smartphones.

Reckless Racing 2 On Its Way To iOS And Android Next Week (video)

iPhone 4S And iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak For Windows Released

Earlier today we heard that the Chronic Dev team had released an untethered jailbreak for Apple’s iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, the app was called Absinthe A5 and it was only available for the Mac.

Now it looks like the Chronic Dev Team has also released a version of Absinthe A5 for Windows, and it is also available as a free download from the Greenpoison website.

Sony Announces New 8MP And 13MP Camera Sensors For Smartphones

Sony has announced two new camera sensors designed to be used in smartphones, and both of these new sensors use a new RGBW matrix which adds a white pixel to the normal RGB layout.

This is designed to improve light sensitivity and produce better photographs at low light, and Sony has said that normally adding a white pixel would reduce image quality, they have managed to implement it whilst improving the image quality.

Windows Phone Marketplace Hits 60,000 Apps

The last data we had on the number of applications available in Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace was back around the end of December, where we heard that there were around 50,000 applications available.

It looks like the Windows Phone Marketplace has now reached over 60,000 applications, and it took Microsoft just under a month to reach their latest milestone.

Awesome Fully Automated Lego Brick Sorting Plant (video)

Any Lego master builders out there that have a large amount of Lego bricks they need to sort. Might be interested in this fantastic Lego sorting plant which has been created to demonstrate a factories manufacturing execution system.

The Lego builders over at BrickIt work commissioned by the Dynaway company to build the miniature sorting plant. Which has been constructed using around 37,500 Lego bricks together with 28 motors, 22 sensors including touch, colour and ultrasonic, together with 7 Lego Mindstorm NXT controller bricks. Counter Strike Unofficially Ported To Android Tablets (video)

Counter Strike fans will be pleased to know that an unofficial port of the game, has now arrived on Android tablets. The classic first person shooter has now been repackaged and ported to the Google Android operating system by the developers over at XDA. Recoding the entire game utilising the Unity3D platform.

The Android version of Counter Strike supports full multiplayer games and is available right now to be downloaded and installed, with either Facebook or Kongregate versions available. Watch the video after the jump to see Counter Strike multiplayer being played in matrix mode on Android tablets.

Google Sky Map Goes Open Source (video)

Over the weekend Google has announced that their Google Sky Map which was launched for Android smartphones back in 2009 and was created by a number of Googlers from the Pittsburgh office during their 20% development time. Will now be moving into the community of open source in a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University who will further development Sky Map in a series of student projects.

Google’s Sky Map's development will now be driven by the Carnegie Mellon University students, with Google engineers remaining closely involved as advisors. In addition Google has also open-sourced the app so that other astronomy enthusiasts can take the code and augment it as they wish.

White Samsung Galaxy Note Goes On Sale In The UK

Samsung has announced that a white version of their Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone has launched in the UK today, and the device will be available exclusively from UK retailer John Lewis.

Samsung have also said that the device will come with £250 worth of free music, films and e-books to the first one hundred customers, and it will stay exclusive with the retailer until February.

Nokia’s Lumia Windows Phone Devices Hit 1 Million Sales In 2011?

Nokia will announced its latest earnings on the 26th of January, and we are expecting to get some actual figures on exactly how many Windows Phone devices the company has sold.

Apple iBooks Passes 350,000 Textbook Downloads In Just 3 Days

According to Global Equities Research, the company which monitors Apple's iBook sales via a proprietary tracking system, has today revealed that Apple’s new textbook service has already passed 350,000 downloads, just 3 days after being launched.

Together with around 90,000 downloads of Apple’s iBooks Author, its free textbook creation tool, during the same time period. Only last week we brought you the news that Apple had launched its new iBooks 2 and iBooks Author service, and already they look to be a success.

Optical Turntables (video)

The Product design studio based in Berlin has created a very unique sound system using optical sensors rather than the tradition needle. The optical turntables were created for the premiere of Volkswagen’s new Beetle at the 2011 IAA motor show.

Rather than using vinyl disks like a traditional record player the new optical turntables uses discs with concentric geometric patterns printed on them and then placed below a glass surface to produce music. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.

Star Wars Uncut, Fans Recreate Every Frame Of The Classic Movie (video)

Back in 2009 the Star Wars Uncut project was started to try and produce a fan made version of the classic Star Wars movie. Star Wars Uncut was started by Casey Pugh, who divided the Star Wars movie into 472 15-second segments and then asked Star Wars fans to help fill the sequences with their own interpretation of the movie.

Now after more than three years the fully complete remake of the Star Wars movie has now been spliced together and is ready to view in a 2 hour masterpiece. Watch it in its full glory after the jump.

Sony Xperia ST25i Kumquat Android Smartphone Leaked

It looks like we have some details on another new Android device that will be launched at MWC 2012 in Barcelona next month, this time from Sony, the Sony Xperia St25i Kumquat.

As you can see from the photo below the Sony Xperia Kumquat comes with the Sony Ericsson branding, although we suspect it will just feature the Sony branding when it is announced next month.

The Worlds Largest Video Game Controller (Video)

A new Guinness World Record has been set for the worlds largest game controller, and the record was taken by this giant NES controller which was made by Ben Allen, Stephen Van’t Hof and Michael Verhulst.

So just how big is the worlds largest game controller? It measures 12 feet wide by 5 feet deep and 1ft 8 inches tall and it weighs in at a massive 265 pounds, it is fully functional and can been seen in action in the video below.

Adafruit Flora Wearable Electronics Announced (video)

Adafruit the open source hardware manufacturer has this week unveiled a new product to its line of products in the form of the Adafruit Flora a new wearable electronics platform.

The Adafruit Flora modules have been designed to provide an easy way to add Bluetooth, GPS, 3-axis accelerometer, compass module, flex sensor, piezo, IR LED, push button, embroidered + capacitive keypad, and OLED features to clothing. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.

Asus Transformer TF101 Android 4.0 ICS Update Coming Mid February

Owners of the Asus Transformer TF101 are patiently waiting for Asus to release the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the original Transformer tablet.

Last week we heard from Asus that the update had been submitted to Google and that it would be released once it had received the necessary approval from Google, and now we have some more details on when it will be available.

Korg Launch New Pocket Kaoss Effects Unit And Synthesiser (videos)

Korg has this week launched a range of new Kaoss devices which take the form of the new mini Kaoss Pad 2 effects unit, and the Kaossilator 2 synthesiser unit. Both are equipped with an X-Y pad and the mini Kaoss Pad 2 has been built to create effects, packing 100 programs, three memory slots, and MP3 playback complete with pitch adjust. Together with the traditional flanger, filter, delay, reverb ear candy, looper, vinyl break, and ducking compressor.

Notion Ink Adam II Specifications Revealed

We were expecting Notion Ink to announced their second generation tablet around December of last year, it is now official and we have some details on the new Notion Ink Adam II tablet.

Notion Ink has announced that they have teamed up with Texas Instruments for the new Adam II tablet and it will come with a TI OMAP 4400 dual core processor and the latest version of Google’s mobile OS, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

New Multi-Touch Smart eBook Interface Concept Demonstrated On Apple’s iPad (video)

A new gesture based multi-touch eBook concept designed by the KAIST Institute of Information Technology Convergence has been demonstrated on Apple’s iPad. Showing us a glimpse of what we can expect to see in the near future when reading eBooks on tablet devices.

The new system has been designed to provide a more natural way of looking through any book. Including multiple page turning using multiple fingers together with faster swipes which turned more than one page at once. Enabling you to quickly advance or move backwards through the pages of your e-book.You can see the system in action in the short video created by KAIST after the jump.

BMW Drives Itself On The Autobahn With ConnectedDrive (Video)

We have already seen a number of self driving cars here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest company to show off their concept of a self driving car is BMW with their ConnectedDrive.

BMW’s Connected Drive uses a number of different sensors to drive the car which include cameras, laser scanners, ultrasound distance sensors and radar, and you can see a car using BMW’s new system driving down the Autobahn in the video below.

LG X3 Quad Core Android 4.0 Smartphone Revealed

MWC 2012 kicks off next month, and we are expecting to see quite a few quad core smartphones, powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor announced, and it looks like we will see at least one new device from LG, the LG X3.

The guys from Pocket Now have managed to get their hands on a render of the LG X3 as well as some specifications on the device and it looks like it will come with NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad core processor.

Apple Says Samsung Galaxy Nexus Copies iPhone Slide To Unlock Feature

Last week we heard that Apple has filed a number of different lawsuits against Samsung in Germany, the lawsuits related to 10 different patents for smartphones and around five patents for tablets.

And now some details have been revealed on one of the lawsuits from Apple against Samsung, and now Apple are claiming that Samsung and Google’s flagship Android smartphone,the Samsung Galaxy Nexus infringes on an Apple patent.

SOPA And PIPA Bills Postponed After Web Protests

Last week some of the worlds largest websites, including Wikipedia, Reddit, Google and thousands of other sites protested against the controversial proposed anti piracy laws SOPA and PIPA.

And now after the protests both SOPA and PIPA have been postponed for now, as the House Judiciary chairman and co-sponsor of SOPA has said that the vote for both bills has now been postponed.

Thunderbolt Connections Arriving On Ultrabooks Later This Year

It has been unveiled this week by industry sources that Acer, Asus and Lenovo could be adding Thunderbolt collectivity to their Ivy Bridge-based ultrabook ranges, which are expected to launch sometime in the second quarter of this year.

The addition of the new Thunderbolt connectivity on ultrabooks will however come at a price as the new Thunderbolt technology is still relatively expensive, adding around $20 to the cost of a unit.

Diablo 3 Launch Delayed Yet Again

Gamers who were hoping to get their hands on Diablo III this quarter, will be disappointed to hear that Blizzard has now announced that the game will be delayed further, and a first-quarter release is now looking out of the question.

Within the announcement Blizzard suggests that there is still a lot of work to be carried out, and hints that the work may be within the game’s core systems. Which would certainly delay the highly anticipated sequel to the Diablo series games much longer than if Blizzard just needed to squash a few bugs before launch.

Absinthe A5 Untethered Jailbreak For iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Released

We heard recently that the iPhone Dev Team were getting ready to release an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, and now pod2g and the Chronic Dev Team have released a new untethered iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak, called Absinthe A5.

Absinthe A5 is based on the the Greenpoison jailbreak tool and it is currently only available for the Mac, there will also be Linux and Windows versions released as well.

CyanogenMod App Store Coming Soon

A couple of weeks ago we heard that Koushik Dutta was considering building a CynaogenMod App store which would allow applications that had been removed from Google’s Android Market.

The CyanogenMod app store idea was met with positive responses from Android fans, and now Koushik has confirmed that he is working on the store and we should see it launch in the furture.

Thorsten Heins Is RIM’s New CEO, As Lazaridis And Balsillie Step Down

RIM seems to have had problem after problem over the last couple of years, the company has been unable to compete with the likes of Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS and now RIM’s two CEO’s Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie are stepping down to make way for a new CEO.

RIM’s new CEO will be Thorsten Heins who is currently RIM’s COO of product engineering, and it will be officially announced later today, although it has already be confirmed in a interview with The Globe and Mail.
