ZTE Skate Smartphone Gets Priced for UK

Toshiba Thrive Tablets Having Wake from Sleep Issue

It sounds like the Toshiba Thrive tablet needs a better alarm clock. Users are reporting on the Toshiba Forums that the Thrive is having issues waking from sleep and has to be rebooted to start. The post on the forum has pages and pages of users with the same exact issue.

Amazon Starts Renting Textbooks To Students Via Kindle

Amazon has this week introduced a new rental system  for students allowing them to now rent textbooks via Kindle devices rather than purchasing them and carrying the heavy textbooks about campus. Amazon rental service now allows students to rent books for a minimum of thirty days and save up to 80% off the print list price.

If you need to rent the books for longer you can add additional days and pay the additional cost. The rental scheme is available on Kindle devices and devices capable of running Amazon’s Kindle including: PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android device, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry.

Apple To Launch Budget iPhone For $350?

As well as all the iPhone 5 rumors over the last few months, we have also heard a couple of rumors that Apple will launch a budget version of the iPhone in order to cash in on the budget smartphone market.

Now according to the BGR’s Jonathan Geller, Apple are getting ready to launch a budget pre-paid iPhone which is expected to retail for $350 and will not need to to sign up to a monthly contract with any of the mobile carriers.

Ideum Unveils Its Platform MT-55 Multitouch $18,000 Table (video)

Ideum have today unveiled details of their new MT-55 Platform multitouch table which they say is the largest and thinnest multitouch table currently available. The MT-55 is equipped with a 55″ 1920×1080 HD  low-iron 5mm tempered glass surface display that has a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio multitouch screen with a wide 178-degree viewing angle.

The Thermochromic Clock (Video)

Some of our readers will remember the Thermochromic Urinal that we featured on Geeky Gadgets a while back, now we have the Thermochromic clock which uses similar technology.

The Thermochromic clock was developed by Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy of CW&T, and this funky clock is controlled by an Arduino, have a look at the video of it in action below.

Apple Testing Out HD Displays For iPad HD?

We have been hearing rumors that Apple will launch its third generation iPad later this year, although from what we have heard it is expected to be sold along side the existing iPad 2 and is not designed to be a replacement for the iPad 2.

There have been a number of rumors that the iPad HD will feature a high resolution display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, and not according to recent reports Apple is currently testing out HD displays for the iPad HD from a number of manufacturers which include Samsung and LG.

Valve Updates Steam With Download Friendly Features

Over the weekend Valve has announced a new update to its Steam gaming application which has brought some much needed new features to the way game downloads are handles by the system. The new update has been designed to provide users with improved download rates in more places around the world, together with simplifying and streamlining the publishing process on Steam.

Bandwidth within the system has been increased to allow for spikes on game launches and downloads will be issued from more locations around the world via a new firewall friendly method that will automatically take advantage of web-caching proxies installed at ISPs.

Acer Aspire 5755 Notebook Announced

Acer has added another new notebook to its Aspire range here in the UK, last week we heard that Acer was launching the new Acer TravelMate 8481 notebook and today they have announced the Acer Aspire 5755 notebook.

The Acer Aspire 5755 notebook features a 15.6 inch LED display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, and it comes with a range of Intel’s latest Core processors, which include the Intel Core i3-2310M processor, the Intel Core i5-2410M processor and a choice of Intel Core i7 processors.

Bitcoin Launches New Secure, Ruxum Exchange

As of today Bitcoin now has a new exchange where its virtual currency can be traded, which is now more secure and been created in after the existing  Mt. Gox vulnerabilities were exposed over recent months. The new Ruxum Exchange has been created by Chad Pankewitz and team and has been designed to provide a more secure environment for Bitcoin traders.

The new Ruxum Exchange has been opened into a private beta for the moment and now allows users to buy, sell and trade both Bitcoin and Namecoin. If you are unfamiliar with either of those two virtual currencies more information is provided after the jump, together with a video explaining Bitcoin.

Back then the number of people on the earth greatly out weighed the number of devices connected to the Internet. However in 2008 those numbers flipped and the number of things connected to the Internet exceed the number of people on earth for the first time.

Stormtrooper To Walk Across Australia For A Good Cause

On the weekend we saw some fun photos of Stormtroopers on vacation, and now one Stormtrooper has decided to walk across Australia to raise money for a good cause.

Australian Paul French is walking a massive 4,100 km or 2,547 miles across Australia from Perth to Sydney in order to raise money for the Starlight Foundation, which is a charity that raises money for ill and hospitalized children.

Adobe Acquires EchoSign For New Digital Document Signature Service

Today Adobe has announced the acquisition of digital signature service EchoSign, which currently supports more than three million users worldwide. The digital signature service will be added to Adobe’s online document exchange and integrated into other Adobe document services to reduce the the time and costs involved with documents being signed via traditional methods, such as fax and overnight envelopes.

Google+ Advert On Facebook Banned

Facebook user and App Developer Michael Lee Johnson has unfortunately now had all his advertising campaigns banned from Facebook after creating an advert on Facebook looking for friends who also used Google+.

Facebook didn’t take to kindly to the advert, advertising their competitor and Google’s new social networking service, and as its states within Facebook’s terms and conditions removed all his adverts and campaigns from Facebook.

Samsung Galaxy Q With 5.3 Inch Super AMOLED Display Rumored

According to Yahoo Korea, Samsung has a new device in the works for its Galaxy range of smartphones and tablets, called the Samsung Galaxy Q it is intended to be a crossover device which will bridge the gap between smartphones and tablets.

The Samsung Galaxy Q is rumored to feature a massive 5.3 inch Super AMOLED display, and if the report is corrected it will debut at IFA 2011 in Berlin in September.

Foursquare iOS Update Adds New Notification Tray

A new update which has been rolled out by Foursquare this week has now added the much requested notification tray to its iOS applications, making it much easier for you to keep up to date with Foursquare activity. Star Wars Themed Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 (Video)

Logitech Squeezebox Wifi Music Player Now Supports Spotify

Lego PC Case Houses 3 Computers

We have featured quite a few gadgets made with Lego here at Geeky Gadgets, and have seen quite a few different PC cases made from Lego, the latest creation is the work of Mike Schropp.

Mozilla Introduces BrowserID Website Sign In Service (video)

Mozilla has unveiled details of its new experimental service called BrowserID, which has been designed to provide browser users a new secure method of signing into websites. Its been designed to use a Verified Email Protocol, with security in mind  and enables websites to get proof of ownership using public key cryptography.

Using the verified email protocol BrowserID can skip the traditional method of signing in to websites using their email address with a confirmation step.  BroswerID provides users with a streamlined one-click experience that is the same on any site they visit. HP TouchPad Now Available In Europe

The HP TouchPad finally went on sale in Europe last Friday, and it is now available in the UK, France and Germany from a wide range of retailers which include PC World, Currys, Comet, Amazon and the Carphone Warehouse, plus HP's own web store in the UK.

In the UK there are two different models of the HP TouchPad available, one with 16GB of storage which retails for £399 and one with 32GB of storage which retails for £479.

HTC To Appeal ITC Ruling On Apple Patent Infringements

Earlier today we heard that the International Trade Commission (ITC) had initially ruled that HTC has infringed on two of Apple’s patents relating to iOS devices, the initial ruling was done by an ITC judge and is still subject to a further ruling from a panel of six ITC judges.

As we mentioned earlier, the ruling is bad news for both HTC and Google’s Android OS, if the final ruling from the six ITC judges find in favour of Apple this could cause major problems for Android, and HTC has now announced that it will be launching an appeal with the ITC.

SHOWWX+ Pocket Pico Projector Now Supports HDMI

If you are looking for a pocket sized pico projector, the Microvision SHOWWX+ might be worth a good look as the company has now upgraded their pocket sized pico projector to support HDMI connectivity. The non-HDMI version of the SHOWWX+ was released in November 2010 and was designed to provide a convenient pocket presentation device by linking to mobile devices.

HP Pre3 To Feature Dual Core 1.2GHz Processor? (Updated)

The HP Pr3, which is HP’s latest webOS based smartphone was announced back in February, and when it was announced it featured a single core 1.4GHz processor, but now it looks like it will come with a dual core 1.2GHz processor.

HP have updated the specifications for the Pre3 on their website, and the processor is now listed as a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core 1.2GHz APQ8060 processor, and it looks like this is the only change that has been made to the new HP Pre 3.

HTC Status (ChaCha) Facebook Phone Goes On Sale For $50

The US version of HTC’s ChaCha Facebook phone has finally gone on sale, the HTC Status is now available for $50 from AT&T, and you will also have to sign up to a new two year contract with AT&T.

The HTC Status is one of the first smartphones to come with a dedicated Facebook function, and a wide range of Facebook functions integrated into the device, it features a 2.6 inch touch screen display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels, and it comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Fujtisu TH40/D Convertible Tablet Launches In Japan This Week

The Fujitsu TH40/D convertible tablet was due to go on sale at the end of June, the launch was delayed and Fujitsu didn’t give us any information on when this new convertible tablet would go on sale.

Fujitsu has now confirmed that the TH40/D convertible tablet will finally go on sale in Japan this week on Friday the 22nd of July, although we still don’t have any information on when it will go on sale in the US and Europe.

iPad 2 Supply Finally Catches Up With Demand

To Say that the new iPad 2 has been a success for Apple is an understatement, the second generation iPad, the iPad 2 went on sale in March, and since then Apple has listed shipping times on their website for the iPad 2 from 3-5 weeks initially to 1-2 weeks in April and then 3-5 days in the middle of July.

It looks like Apple has finally caught up with the demand for the iPad 2 as they have now listed the device as shipping on their website within 1-3 business days, which is the standard shipping time on most Apple products.

Apple has been going after a number of different Android smartphone manufacturers over patents relating to technology used in the iPhone and other iOS devices, both Samsung and HTC are subject to legal proceeding from Apple and both companies have also filed lawsuits against Apple.

HTC is the first company to have been dealt a major blow in these proceedings as the International Trade Commission has found that HTC has infringed on two of Apple’s patents.

Google Releases Android 3.2 SDK To Developers

The latest version of Google’s Android OS, designed for tablets, Android 3.2 Honeycomb has already started rolling out to certain Honeycomb devices like the Motorola Xoom, and now Google has released the Android 3.2 SDK to developers.

Android 3.2 brings a range of new features to Honeycomb and tablets, which include Optimizations for a wider range of screen sizes, as well as 10.1 inch displays which were supported in Android 3.1.

Apple Leaks New LED Cinema Display With Thunderbolt

Whilst we are waiting for Apple to release OS X Lion, and also some new hardware which may include the new 2011 MacBook Air’s, it seems that Apple has leaked a new product on their site.

The guys over at Mac Rumors spotted a new LED Cinema Display on Apple’s website last Friday, it has subsequently been removed from Apple’s site, but not before some details and photos were obtained by Mac Rumors.

While they aren’t selling, the birds and their porcine enemies rendered through such a medium-pay generous tribute to a timeless game. Mary Poppins Would Approve: The Backpack Umbrella

When this thing is on your back, don’t expect to fly though. Mary Poppins is only  a movie, after all. Pictured below is a backpack umbrella that comes with its own wearable carrying case. Operation is dead simple, just pull it out, open, and attach to the lightweight backpack. The backpack umbrella’s ultimate value is it frees the hands to carry stuff. Problem is it does risk getting caught on things like low-hanging wires or branches.
