EA to go 100% digital

Physical media might not be dead yet, but here is another nail in the coffin. Games publisher, EA recently announced that they will soon be a 100%-digital company. EA's president, Frank Gibeau says that the digital market is the fastest growing area for the company (which is currently making the company $1.2 billion in revenues annually. Not bad huh?).

Microsoft registers new Xbox domain names

Microsoft has not officially announced the next-generation Xbox and the name of the upcoming console has yet to be revealed, though we are all waiting eagerly. Some possible names are the Xbox 720, or the Xbox 8. Now it has been reported that Microsoft has registered several new Xbox-related domain names. These include Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org. Hmmm. The plot thickens.

NEC LaVie Z Lays Claim the World’s Lightest Ultrabook Title

NEC isn’t exactly the company I think of when it comes time to shop for new notebook or ultrabook. However, the company has unveiled a new ultrabook that is very light and thin and claims to be the world’s lightest ultrabook at 875 g. The ultrabook is only 14.9 mm thick at the thickest part.

Amazon Buys UpNext 3D Mapping Firm

It seems that Apple is not the only company interested in their own mapping software, as Amazon has acquired 3D mapping firm UpNext in a deal worth more than 2.8 million.

Amazon obviously intends to use its new mapping acquisition for its future Kindle tablets, which run a modified version of Google’s Android OS, so we suspect Amazon will be launching their own mapping software in the future.

Apple To Launch Retina Display iMac In October (Rumor)

Apple announced the new MacBook Pro last month which was Apple’s first Mac to come with a Retina display, one thing that Apple didn’t announce was any new iMacs, which has led to speculation that new models will be announced later in the year.

Now according to a recent report by Digitimes, who are citing Apple’s ‘upstream supply chain sources’, we can apparently expect a new iMac with a Retina display to launch around October of this year.

Flat Boombox Ultra-thin Speaker Concept

Master industrial design student Hannes Harms has created the making of an awesome ultra-thin speakers system, using flat materials and printable components.

The design of the ultra-thin speaker combines and a speaker component with a pre-cut sheet of stainless steel measuring just 0.5mm thick, with volume and play buttons integrated into the stand of the speaker.

RIM’s BlackBerry 10 2013 Roadmap Leaked

Last week we heard that ROM were delaying the launch of their new mobile OS, BlackBerry 10 until next year, and now it looks like their 2013 BlackBerry 10 Roadmap has been leaked.

The guys over at BlackBerryOS have received a photo of RIM’s 2012 and 2013 roadmap and it looks like there will be two BlackBerry 10 device landing in the first quarter of next year.

Skytex Skypad Gemini And Protos Android 4.0 Tablets Announced

Skytex has announced the addition of two new Android Skypad tablets to its range in the form of the Gemini And Protos. The two new tablets will be arriving in stores during July and both run Google’s latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system.

Both Android tablets are also powered by a 1.2 GHz Arm Cortex A8 processor supported by 1GB RAM. With graphics provided by a Mali-400 graphics card.

Every time Google releases a new version of their Android OS, they place a new mascot on the Google lawn, last week Google placed a new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean mascot outside their offices.

Mozilla Renames Boot2Gecko To Firefox OS And Partners With Six Carriers

Apple Denied Ban On HTC Devices By ITC

Back in May some of HTC’s devices were held up in customs before they entered the US, the devices were held after an ITC ruling which found that some of HTC’s devices infringed on Apple’s patents.

The two devices in question, the HTC One X and HTC Evo 4G LTE were found not to have infringed on Apple’s patents, and customs cleared the two handsets for importation into the US.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Now On 10 Percent Of Devices

The last information we had from Google was at the beginning of June when they revealed that Android 4.0 Ice ream Sandwich was on around 7 percent of device, Google have now released their latest Android distribution figures.

Google has now released its latest distribution date and Android 4.0 is now on 10.7 percent of Android devices, Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still in the top spot with a 64 percent distribution.

Ouya Android Hackable Game Console Concept

Samsung Galaxy Note Headed To T-Mobile August 8th

We were expecting the Samsung Galaxy Note to land on US mobile carrier T-Mobile some time this month, but now according to the guys over at TMO News, the Galaxy Note will land on T-Mobile on the 8th of August.

The T-Mobile version of the Galaxy Note recently passed through the FCC so we were expecting the handset to land on T-Mobile this month, but it now looks like the 8th of August could be the actual launch date.

Google’s Android Hits 50 Percent Of US Smartphone Market

There seems to be no stopping Google’s Android platform, Google recently announced that they are now activating more than 1 million Android devices per day, and now according to a recent report, Android now makes up 50 percent of the US smartphone market.

According to ComScore for the three month period ending in May 2012 Google’s Android has a 50.9 percent market share, whilst Apple’s iOS had a 31.9 percent share.

Amazon Flow Barcode Augmented Reality Scanning App Lands On Android

Amazon has finally launched its barcode scanning app on to Android this week. Announcing that Flow Amazon’s bar code scanning app which has been available on iOS devices for some time, is now available to download from the Google Play App Store.

Amazon’s standard Android app already supports bar code scanning, but Amazon’s Flow application brings a little more refinements and a number of additional features to users.

Samsung Loses Appeal On US Galaxy Tab 10.1 Ban

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 was recently banned for sale in the US, and Samsung had appealed the decision in an attempt to have the ban lifted, but the court has now ruled and it is not good news for Samsung.

Judge Lucy Koh has denied Samsung’s motion to have the ban on their Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet lifted in the US, and the device will remain banned until the trial goes ahead between Apple and Samsung.

Nokia Claims Google Nexus 7 Tablet Infringes On Its Patents

Last week Google announced their first Android tablet, the Google Nexus 7 which is made for Google by Asus, and now it would appear that Nokia is less than pleased about Google’s new tablet.

According to a recent report by The Inquirer, Nokia has said that the Google Nexus 7 infringes on Nokia patents, and it seems to have something to do with a patent relating to the IEEE 802.11 WiFi standard.
