Stampede 10-Petaflop Supercomputer Equipped With Intel 50-Core Chips Posted: 23 Sep 2011 05:22 AM PDT Its been announced today by the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) and University of Texas that they are currently creating a 10-Petaflop supercomputer named Stampede that will be equipped with Intel’s 50-core processors capable of 10-Petaflop (or 10,000 trillion operations per second). The new Stampede supercomputer will be arriving in 2013 and will be one of the world’s most powerful computers for scientific and financial applications. When finished Stampede will be equipped with several thousand Dell “Zeus” servers with each server having dual 8-core processors from the forthcoming Intel Xeon processor E5 Family (formerly code-named “Sandy Bridge-EP”) and each server will have 32 gigabytes of memory. Scientists Reconstruct Movies From Our Minds Using Brain Activity (video) Posted: 23 Sep 2011 04:28 AM PDT Just like something from a sci-fi movie scientists have been able to use human brain activity to reconstruct movies from the mind of volunteer test subjects with some amazing results. UC Berkeley researchers have succeeded in decoding and reconstructing people's dynamic visual experiences using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and computational models. The researchers showed test subjects a number of hollywood trailers and then used their brain activity to reconstruct an image as shown below and in the video after the jump. Allen the founder of the Ancestry.com uses a unique method of estimating the number of users currently within the Google+ ranks by using uncommon user names.
