While new console launches are notoriously choked with shovelware and uninspired ports, the Wii U seems to be changing that to some extent. While the WIi U has seen its fair share of them, the unique GamePad features or perhaps Nintendo’s own insistence on a certain standard of quality to offset the Wii U gamble is certainly raising the bar for the humble port.

Sony Patents NFC-based Second Hand Game Sale Suppression Method

It’s no secret that 2012 has not been a banner year for Sony and one of the ways it wants to turn that around seems to be by taking on the used games market.  A patent filed by SCE Japan describes a novel solution of associating a game copy with a single user account, not through the use of passcode authentication, but by putting an NFC chip on every  game disc.

Asus Adopts Leap Motion Gesture Technology For New PCs (video)

We have featured the new Leap motion technology before on Geeky Gadgets, but today Asus and Leap have announced that they will be including Leap motion sensing technology with select computer systems this year.

UK Regulator Ofcom Reviewing Mobile Phone Contracts

UK Regulator Ofcom is reviewing mobile phone contracts here in the UK, and they are considering modifying their general conditions to allow customers to leave their monthly contracts before it is up if the operator makes changes to the contract, for example if the mobile phone operator decides to increase their prices in the middle of your contract.

Ofcom has decided to review mobile phone contracts after it received a total of 1,644 complaints from mobile phone users for the period of September 2011 and May 2012.

HTC One SV Sim Free Now Available In The UK

The new HTC One SV went up for pre-order in the UK last month, and now it would appear that the SIM free version of the handset is now available in the UK for £349.99 including taxes.

The HTC One SV is powered by a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, there is also a 4.3 inch inch Super LCD 2 touchscreen display and dual cameras.

How The World’s Largest Light Painting Was Created (video)

Michael Bosanko created the world’s largest ever light painting last year within a 35,000-square-foot aircraft hangar in Coventry, UK using light painting photography. Now he has released an interesting video detailing how the worlds largest light painting was created.

The light painting photography was captured using torches and a one-hour-long exposure on the camera, to pick up on the lines he traces using different coloured beams in the dark. Watch the video after the jump to learn more about the World's Largest Light Painting project and see how it was created.

Fans of the original Elite game first release back in by Acornsoft in 1984 for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers, as well as new gamers who have pledged for a remake of the awesome game on the Kickstarter website by Frontier Developments.

Will be pleased to learn that the Elite: Dangerous Kickstarter Project has passed its pledging goal of £1,250,000 with a few days to spare, and currently sits at £1,292,863 with 35 hours left to run.

Skype App For Windows Phone Updated

Microsoft has released a new version of their Skype app for their Windows Phone platform, the new version comes with some a number of improvements and bug fixes for Windows Phone 8.

Skype have removed the Windows Phone People Hub integration, according to the release this has been removed due to stability issues, this feature is expected to be available at a later date.

Apple To Buy Social Maps Service Waze (Rumor)

Apple’s Maps software, which replaced Google Maps on the iPhone with the introduction of iOS 6 has come under quite a bit of criticism, and Apple have said they are working to improve the service.

Now according to a recent report, Apple are considering acquiring social maps service Waze, of course this is just a rumor at the moment, and there has been no confirmation from either company that a deal is in the works.

Samsung Confirms Multiple Tizen Based Smartphones Coming This Year

Yesterday we heard that Samsung is working with a number of mobile carriers on producing smartphones running the open source Tizen mobile OS, and now Samsung has confirmed that they are working on multiple Tizen based devices.

Bloomberg received the following statement from Samsung, which confirms the earlier rumors that we will see new Tizen based devices this year, although not details have been given on when they will be available.

CuBox Pro Open Source Mini PC Announced

A new open source mini computer has been created and unveiled this week called the CuBox Pro. Which has been created using a 800-megahertz dual-issue ARM PJ4 Marvell Armada 510 SoC (system on a chip) processor, supported by 1GB or RAM.

The CuBox Pro mini PC has no fan and measures just 2 inches square and weighs 3.2 ounces, but is capable of displaying full high definition video and will sell for around $159 when it launches later this month.

Panasonic Toughpad FZ-A1 Android Tablet Launches

Panasonic has this week announced a new addition to their range of rugged tablets with the launch of their new Toughpad FZ-A1 Android tablet, which was first unveiled back in November of 2011 as the Toughpad A1.

The new Toughpad FZ-A1 Android tablet is now equipped with protection systems that are MIL-STD 810G and IP65 compliant, and have been designed to protect the tablets delicate electronics from 4ft drops and temperatures ranging from 14 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Google Nexus 4 has become quite a popular smartphone, the device is currently sold out on both the UK and US Google Play stores, and seems to sell out as soon as it is available on the Google Play store.

Tomb Raider Multiplayer Details Revealed

Following on from the confirmation that the latest Tomb Raider reboot will include multiplayer modes for gamers to enjoy, today the first details of what will be included within in the multiplayer modes has been revealed.

The multiplayer support was officially announced by Eidos Montreal this week via a post on the official Edios forums by Eidos community manager Meagan Marie, and will provide players with a number of characters to choose from offering different stats and equipment loadouts to play with.

Apple Says Do No Disturb Bug Will Fix Itself

There have been a number of reports about a bug in iOS 6 over the last few days, related to Apple’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature in iOS 6, the problem with the feature is that it has not turned itself off when it was set to do so.

Apple has now released a support document relating to the bug, and suggested that the issue will fix itself manually by the 7th of January, in the meantime you will have to manually turn the feature off yourself.

After looking at hundreds of millions of ad impressions on its ad network, Chitika has determined that after the Christmas holiday, the Apple iPad has seen its web share decline by 7.1 percent. Prior to Christmas, Apple’s tablet accounted for 86% of the tablet based traffic on the web.

Google Nexus 7 Dock Coming January 10th

Google and Asus have yet to start selling the new Google Nexus 7 Dock that we saw recently, but now according to a number of reports, this Nexus 7 accessory will be available from the 10th of January.

The Google Nexus 7 Dock will retail for $40, and retailer B&H now has the dock listed with a shipping date of the 10th of January, this date has yet to be confirmed by Asus or Google.

Apple To Announce Q1 2013 Earnings On January 23rd

Apple has announced that they will announce their quarter one 2013 earnings on Wednesday the 23rd of January, and we will get to find out just how well Apple’s new products have done over the last few months.

Apple’s latest earnings will included details of how many iPhone 5s and how many of the new iPad Mini Apple have sold since they were launched, we suspect we will see some impressive figures.

Microsoft Buys R2 Studios

Microsoft has made another acquisition, this time it is a small startup that both Google and Apple were interested in, R2 Studios, and along with the purchase of the company Microsoft has also acquired a number of patents.

R2 Studios was founded by Blake Krikorian in 2011, Blake was previously behind the Slingbox, he and his team will now join Microsoft, and the company produces software to display content on TVs, Microsoft plans to use the software for their Xbox console.
