New Capacitive Touchscreen Works With Gloved Hands Posted: 25 Oct 2011 09:24 AM PDT A new touchscreen has been developed by SMK Corp that will allow users to navigate on the touchscreen even while their hands are gloved. SMK overcame the problem not by modifying how a capacitive touchscreen works, but by adding a secondary detection solution to enable users to use gloved hands. The new screen detection system has been developed by SMK using a new chip that supports high-sensitivity detection and improved detection sensitivity. It does this by employing a sensor panel structure that has a high resistance to noise to prevent malfunctions caused by noise. Enabling it to detect a gloved hand through 1.5mm thick screen resin. Netflix Loses 800,000 Customers In Last Quarter Posted: 25 Oct 2011 07:57 AM PDT When Netflix launches in the UK And Ireland soon it will be hoping to make up a few of the customer subscriptions it has reported losing in the last quarter, which is estimated at around 800,000 customers. The loses are due to a few bad moves by Netflix over the past few months when it first decided to increase its prices and then split its DVD disk lending service and in streaming service into two separate companies annoying it exiting customer base. After which it then back tracked and cancelled the creation of the new company Qwikster set to take on its DVD rental business. The gaming simulator incorporates the worlds first portable omni-directional treadmill designed by Swedish company MSE Weibull to provide a fully immersive feeling, and also projects the game inside a 360-degree, 4 metre high and 9 metre wide Igloo Vision video dome to make it feel as immersive as possible. While riding the little robot is capapble of reaching speeds of up to 6 mph and rides in a similar way to that of a human. The amazing new full HD glasses-free 3D display has been developed by NICT, in collaboration with JVC Kenwood and is a great example of how display technology is being pushed to its limits. The 200 inch screen weighs in at 500kg and consists of a condenser lens which focuses the light creating a sharp image, and a special diffuser film which lowers the horizontal diffusion angle, creating a smooth transition between the different viewing angles. Worlds First Flying Ball Drone Unveiled By Japan’s Ministry of Defence (video) Posted: 25 Oct 2011 03:47 AM PDT The Research Department at Japan’s Ministry of Defence has this week unveiled their new creation which is apparently the the world’s first spherical flying machine, and immediately reminded me of the flying ball drone from Star Wars. The flying ball drone has been designed to hover like a helicopter, and take-off and land vertically from any terrain. The Bao Research Group led by Zhenan Bao has demonstrated the new film/skin which is created by spraying the carbon nanotubes in liquid suspension onto a thin layer of silicon. This new nanotube-infused artificial skin can register pressure ranging from a firm pinch between your thumb and forefinger to twice the pressure exerted by an elephant standing on one foot.
