Nintendo certainly hoped that the 3DS would take over and sell as well as the DS had before it. So far, that just hasn’t happened though with the 3DS just not making the cut with consumers staying away from the portable console so far. The 3DS is selling better than it was thanks to the price cut from a few months back.

HP Closes Palm webOS Retail Stores

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 07:57 AM PDT

HP has officially closed down the Palm webOS retail stores in the US, the move comes just a few weeks after HP announced that they would stop selling webOS based devices, and they dropped the price of the HP TouchPad down to $100, which led the device to sell out quickly.

HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion last year, and after poor sales of the new HP webOS devices, HP decided to put an end to producing webOS devices, but did the company really give webOS a chance? Considering HP announced when they purchased Palm they would invest heavily in webOS, it doesn’t look like HP did what it said it would.

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 4S Battery Comparison

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 07:32 AM PDT

I have only been using my new iPhone 4S for a couple of days now but I have already noticed a difference in the battery usage compared to that of my older iPhone 4. But the team over at iLounge have used the weekend to put both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S in a head-to-head battle to see how their battery life compares to each other,  in certain circumstances.

In Apple’s official specifications, they claim that their new iPhone 4S has an improved talk time over the old iPhone 4 but worse standby time. As you can see from the statistics below iLounge show that the iPhone 4S lives up to Apple’s claims in the voice department, but doesn’t last as long as the iPhone 4 when using 3G data. But remember the new iPhone 4S has a dual core processor rather than a single.

The Document Foundation creators of the LibreOffice office suite of applications, have this week announced that they are currently working on projects to bring LibreOffice to Android and iOS devices, together with accessibility through web browsers.

The Libreoffice port project is based on the work of Tor Lillqvist and will now be focusing on bringing its suite of applications to mobile devices in the near future. 18TB Hard Drives Possible Using Table Salt

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 05:30 AM PDT

If you thought hard drive storage had maxed out at 3TB you might be interested to know that researchers at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) have developed a new production method which theoretically could take hard drive storage to 18 TB using plain old table salt or more specifically, sodium chloride within the manufacturing process.

The research team headed up by Dr Joel Yang has discovered a way to increase the data density of a drive to 3.3 Terabit/inch2, effectively meaning 18TB hard drives are possible. Data on a traditional hard drive is stored using nanoscopic magnetic grains. With several of these grains clustered together measuring around 7nm are then used to store one bit of information. Hence if you can pack them together more densely more storage is then possible within the same amount of space.

Windows 7 Passes XP For The First Time To Become Most Used OS Worldwide

For the first time since its launch Windows 7 has now passed its older Windows XP operating system to take the crown as the most used OS worldwide. The new figures released by Statcounter revealed that Windows 7 accounts for 40.21% of the global desktop operating system usage, with Windows XP slipping down to 38.64%.

When Microsoft released Windows Vista the  predecessor to Windows 7 and a successor to Windows XP, it didn’t grab users attention as much as Microsoft would have hoped and struggled to gain any user momentum. Mainly due to its very bloated installation, sluggish performance and its over intrusive security measures.
