Posted: 07 Jul 2013 09:11 AM PDT Drones have made a big splash in pop culture recently. You can't seem to watch a movie, read a book or play a video game that concerns modern military topics without broaching the topic of drones. That's not to mention all the conspiracy theorists and their drone paranoia. Unfortunately, drones are expensive. But now, thanks to the work of Jasper van Loenen, you can make a drone of your own out of just about anything! With a 3D printer and a few minor bits and pieces you can pick up at your local hardware and electronic stores, you can create a Drone It Yourself kit that can turn anything reasonably lightweight into a drone. Don't believe me? Check out the video below. Posted: 07 Jul 2013 09:08 AM PDT I hate spiders, but this is too interesting not to report on. We all know spiders use their webs to catch prey, but, according to a new study reported in the Scientific Reports journal, spiders also make use of electricity to attract their dinner. Robert Dudley and Victor Ortega-Jimenez, researches at the University of California Berkley, discovered that spider webs change shape in response to an insect's electrostatic charge. This causes positively charged insects to be attracted to the web. Posted: 07 Jul 2013 09:05 AM PDT The HTC One is one of the hottest, and arguably best, smartphones on the market right now, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. Like all devices, it can stand to be improved quite a bit. It's taken a bit to get here, but the HTC One is finally receiving its first major update in the form of the 4.2 Android update. The update answers a lot of complaints people had about the HTC One while also adding Android 4.2 features such as the Daydream screensaver, lock-screen widgets (or, to be more precise, widget), and quick settings toggles. The update also makes screenshots instantly shareable and integrates Instagram with HTC's BlinkFeed. The video below shows many of these features and more. Posted: 07 Jul 2013 09:01 AM PDT Two days ago, on July 5th, Instagram for the iOS got an update that enabled a new landscape mode for picture and video use. Taking photos and videos sideways tends to create a better picture quality and makes production easier and more professional-looking in the long run. The update, which is numbered 4.0.2, also brings Cinema stabilization support to front-facing cameras. This means you'll finally be able to take better videos of yourself while watching the screen! I'm not a big phone photo or videographer, but I hear that opens the door to quite a few more possibilities. Solar Impulse Finishes Its Trek Posted: 07 Jul 2013 08:58 AM PDT Solar Impulse, a solar-powered airplane, finished its trek across the United States yesterday to become the first solar-powered airplane ever to fly coast-to-coast in the U.S. The plane, officially dubbed the Solar Impulse HB-SIA, is powered by more than 11,000 solar panels laid across its 208 foot wingspan. The panels provide power to the plane and charge a battery during the day that takes over at night. The plane had already completed international and intercontinental trips before flying across the U.S., so its success was hardly in question. It took off on May 3rd from Mountain View, California to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. It completed multiple stretches during the flight and spent a couple weeks at each stop before continuing across the US, stopping in Arizona, Texas, Missouri and Virginia. SpaceX Shows-Off New Nav Sensors Posted: 07 Jul 2013 06:07 AM PDT Okay, so this is admittedly a little geeky to get excited over, but it's awesome to watch nonetheless. Last month SpaceX, a private spaceflight company, tested its new navigational sensors by launching its Grasshopper rocket 325 meters (1,066 feet) into the air and then landing it safely in the same location it took off from. The landing is one of the smoothest I've ever seen and explosion-free, which is something you want if you're going to strap yourself to a rocket, fly to space and expect to get back in one piece. SpaceX just recently released a video of the test, which is embedded below. I highly suggest watching it in HD. The Google Difference on the S4 Posted: 07 Jul 2013 06:05 AM PDT By now you've probably heard of the Google Editions of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One that have hit the Play Store and are available for purchase without carrier contracts and whatnot. Both phones now run Android 4.2 since they're being offered by Google and also have a few other differences you may want to be mindful of before making a purchase. First of all, these aren't updates. The Google Editions of these phones aren't equivalent to the difference between the iPhone and the iPhone S series. They're still the same phones – same size and hardware – but they're running a different operating system. Whether or not you want to get the S4 Google Edition comes down to how much you value Android over AT&T's TouchWiz. Posted: 07 Jul 2013 06:02 AM PDT Have you ever tried to use Google Maps to get to fictional destinations? I won't embarrass myself by naming said destinations, but you might be interested in knowing that a mystical place is now available via Google's Street View. Diagon Alley, the popular magical marketplace from Harry Potter can now be seen via Street View. Of course, it isn't the actual place. Diagon Alley doesn't actually exist. (Sorry Harry Potter fans.) What you'll find via Street View is the set from the movie that is located at Warner Bros. London studio. You can even go inside the various buildings and tour the entirety of Diagon Alley online for free! Posted: 07 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT When Astrid, a task management service, was acquired by Yahoo back in May, the company said it would close its doors within 90 days. Yesterday, Astrid got a bit more specific and told consumers it would be closing on August 5th. Astrid was kind enough to leave its users with a nice letter and alternative suggestions about where they could take their business. Click to read more to view the entirety of this article and the letter or, if you've already done so, scroll down just a bit. Final Bids are in for Hulu, again Posted: 07 Jul 2013 05:58 AM PDT So Hulu, which is jointly owned by Disney, Fox and Comcast, is looking to sell and the final bids from prospective buyers DirecTV, AT&T and Guggenheim Digital Media have come in. While we don't know who bid what yet – it's entirely possible Hulu turns down all three bids and keeps things copasetic – we can see the potential futures of Google. AT&T and DirecTV want to do the similar things with the company. They both want to add it to their array of packages and run it as a standalone business to try to maximize profits and bring in even more money than they already do. This could mean good changes that better the service so they can warrant charging more, but it could also mean show restrictions and longer content update times than before.
