China Builds New Fastest Supercomputer

Posted: 08 Jun 2013 05:36 AM PDT

Everyone's always looking to be on top in today's digital age. China's Tianhe-2 supercomputer is slated to make it the most technologically advanced country in the world – at least in the department of supercomputer creation.

Jack Dongarra, a professor at the University of Tennessee, confirmed that the computer operates at about 30.7 petraflops per second. It may sound like something out of Back to the Future, but China's new supercomputer blows the U.S.'s fastest computer out of the water. Titan, the U.S.'s current reigning supercomputer champion, only clocks in at 17.6 petraflops.

High-Speed Internet in Schools

Posted: 08 Jun 2013 05:34 AM PDT

It wasn't that long ago that I was sitting in a high school classroom using a proxy to bypass my school's shitty website blocking software to play games while wasting the day away. So trust me when I tell you, most grade schools' internet is trash. It's obvious that schools don't place an emphasis on the internet, or technology in general, despite us being in a world that places a major emphasis on regular internet interaction and connectivity.

President Obama said during a speech at a high school in Mooresville, North Carolina that he intends to order federal agencies to find the funds to equip 99% of the United States' public schools with high-speed broadband internet and Wi-Fi by 2018.

Phone Facial Security

Posted: 08 Jun 2013 05:31 AM PDT

We've talked about the new age of security that's on the horizon before. Passwords and pins are old and easily hacked or discovered. It's time for a change. While other companies work on fingerprint analysis opportunities, Google has decided to take the next step forward and put facial recognition software to use. Earlier this week, Google patented a method by which it uses facial expressions as keys to unlock phones.

Google has been working on using facial recognition software with phone security for a while now. Just last fall it patented a system that allows multiple users to face-unlock the same phone if need be. It took an added step forward by patenting a way in which facial expressions are used instead of just a picture of someone's face.

Gamestop Rises Despite Used Game Controversy

Posted: 08 Jun 2013 05:28 AM PDT

The used game controversy generated by the Xbox One's claim to make people pay extra to play a used game has left many people thinking Gamestop, who's revenue source comes largely from used game sales, would at least speak out against Microsoft for its efforts to cut into its used game profits. However, the news hasn't affect Gamestop at all. In fact, since the announcement, Gamestop shares have been on the rise.

If you've been following the news regarding how Xbox One's used game policy works, you know it's being left up to each individual company's discretion. While most have denied commenting on whether or not they'll require an activation fee, it's widely accepted that any companies opting to do so will inevitably be shooting themselves in the foot. Although I think we can all agree EA is going to be the first company to jump on this nickel-and-dime bandwagon.

The Reviews are in for The Last of Us

Posted: 08 Jun 2013 05:25 AM PDT

The Last of Us, a Sony exclusive video game set in a post apocalyptic world teaming with zombies and unsavory humans, has been receiving a ton of press in the gaming community since its media embargo dropped earlier this week and the reviews hit the internet. The game has almost unanimously been proclaimed as one of, if not the best, games this year, and even received a few comments referring to it as the best game of the PS3/Xbox 360 console generation.

Even though the game is a PS3 exclusive, Xbox Live's "Marjor Nelson" even commented on Twitter about the game, giving Naughty Dog a nod for making a "solid game". At the moment the game stands with a Metacritic score of 96, higher than any other game that's hit the shelves this year.
