Apple to Offer Refunds with GPU Replacement Program Posted: 18 Aug 2013 09:15 AM PDT I've never owned a Mac, which was apparently a good idea for anyone to follow back in 2011. Apple’s 2011 iMacs that underwent the HDD replacement program are seeing another replacement program to fix faulty equipment, this time with the GPU. 27-inch iMacs purchased from May 2011 to October 2012 are eligible for free repair due to faulty AMD Radeon HD 6970M GPUs. The problem primarily affects i5 and i7 processors, causing visual distortions such as white and blue vertical lines or solid black displays. In addition to free upgrades, anyone who already paid to have the GPU replaced prior to the program's announcement is eligible for a refund to cover the costs. Instagram Virus Used in Marketing Scam Posted: 18 Aug 2013 09:12 AM PDT Instagram is extremely popular and a great, free marketing resource for those who can build a worthwhile following. Those with large following can turn a profit by posting ads for businesses that mainly pay for access to the account's community. A recent virus has made it possible for people to bolster their status and more readily appeal to businesses by buying a fake following. The virus is a repurposed credit card information stealing program that generates "likes" and followers on Instagram. People with high "likes" and followers draw the attention of advertisers and sell face time with their community to them for high sums of money, making Instagram a lucrative market. With this virus, people buy 1000 "likes" for $30, and/or 1000 followers for $15, through online forums and then use the stats to trick advertisers into buying ad time on their account. ICANN Kills Google’s Dotless Domain Dreams Posted: 18 Aug 2013 09:09 AM PDT Back in April, Google sent a letter to ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, proposing a dotless domain system that would make use of the gTLDs, generic top-level domains, that Google had applied to manage. The proposal, if accepted, would allow computer users to type in words in their url in order to produce desired search results more quickly. ICANN shot down the proposal, citing that security and stability issues that dotless domains would cause. They also raised concerns about how dotless domains would screw up HTTPS certifications and proxy-based internal routing. Steve Wosniak Speaks Out About ‘Jobs’ Movie Posted: 18 Aug 2013 09:06 AM PDT Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard about the Jobs movie that was recently released in theaters. It's a biographical film chronicling Steve Jobs' life as he helped created Apple and revolutionize the mobile device industry. Steve Wosniak, a co-founder of Apple who worked closely with Steve Jobs since Apple's inception, went to the midnight showing of the movie and left rather perturbed. "There were a lot of things wrong," he said during an interview on Friday. "I don't like seeing a lot of people I know not get the respect they deserve." Research Scammers Take Out Twitter Spammers Posted: 18 Aug 2013 09:04 AM PDT Spam is part of the internet. Whenever you choose to surf, play an online game, or simply check your social media profiles, you're bound to be bombarded by spam of some kind. Most of us accept this as fact and just live with, closing pop-ups and deleting random messages as they appear, but sometimes spam can get out of control and ruin otherwise enjoyable website and gaming communities. To prevent that from happening to Twitter, researchers created a scam that specifically targets spammers in an attempt to alleviate Twitter spam. A team a researchers from the University of California, Berkley , and George Mason University worked with Twitter to purchase more than 125,000 fraudulent Twitter accounts that were created over a ten month period since June 2012. Using these accounts, the researchers created a program to sniff out fraudulent accounts and stop them from being created.
